What if there was an app that told you what song to listen to, what coffee to order, who to date, even what to do with your life—an app that could ensure your complete and utter happiness? What if you never had to fail or make a wrong choice?

What if you never had to fall?

Fast-forward to a time when Apple and Google have been replaced by Gnosis, a monolith corporation that has developed the most life-changing technology to ever hit the market: Lux, an app that flawlessly optimizes decision making for the best personal results. Just like everyone else, sixteen-year-old Rory Vaughn knows the key to a happy, healthy life is following what Lux recommends. When she’s accepted to the elite boarding school Theden Academy, her future happiness seems all the more assured. But once on campus, something feels wrong beneath the polished surface of her prestigious dream school. Then she meets North, a handsome townie who doesn’t use Lux, and begins to fall for him and his outsider way of life. Soon, Rory is going against Lux’s recommendations, listening instead to the inner voice that everyone has been taught to ignore — a choice that leads her to uncover a truth neither she nor the world ever saw coming.

“I formed them free, and free they must remain,”

Free To Fall had almost everything I like in a book – conspiracies, tons of plot twists, people-who-were-not-who-you-thought-they-were, seemingly invincible villains, betrayals, NO insta-love, and (best of all) the the story was set in a boarding school (I have a soft spot in my heart for boarding school stories)! It was undoubtedly my favourite summer read.

The first three or so chapters of the book weren’t too eventful and rather draggy, but due to the fact that as a personal rule, I never abandon books in between, I read on. I am so glad I did, because the book quickly picked up speed and it became painfully difficult to look away from its pages.

The book addresses a problem we all face today: dependency on technology. Set in 2030, a time when majority of people consult their handhelds (called Geminis) when forced to make a decision, however trivial, the book asks the question: is a life without the freedom to choose, the freedom to make mistakes, really a life at all?   Now, usually when authors try to address this issue, I find it very off-putting, but that was not the case with Free To Fall. The author gets her point across without being preachy and all “hurr-durr technology is evil and destructive and Thomas Edison was a witch”.

Although some of the plot twists were a bit predictable (or maybe that’s just my brain working overtime), and some events that took place in the book were too convenientlytimed. it didn’t lessen the overall enjoyability factor of the book. Overall, a lovely read, and a reminder that more attention should be paid to books by authors that aren’t too publicized.

A beautiful and distinguished family.
A private island.

A brilliant, damaged girl; a passionate, political boy.
A group of four friends—the Liars—whose friendship turns destructive.
A revolution. An accident. A secret.
Lies upon lies.
True love.
The truth.
We Were Liars is a modern, sophisticated suspense novel from National Book Award finalist and Printz Award honoree E. Lockhart.

Read it.
And if anyone asks you how it ends, just LIE.

“The island is ours. Here, in some way, we are young forever”

I’ll be keeping this review short won’t be discussing too many aspects of the plot, because I’d recommend everyone to start reading this book with little knowledge of it. That being said, a warning to those expecting a fast-paced mystery, or an intricate plot: don’t bother with this book.

We Were Liars, although it didn’t follow a plot, per se, still managed to somehow keep my attention. I don’t know if it was the fairy tales littered throughout the book (I adored those) or the melancholy tone it held, but somehow I couldn’t stop reading it.

One thing thing I noticed which upset quite a lot of people was the writing style. The sentences were choppy and fragmented, and there was a heavy usage of dramatic imagery and metaphors. While it was off-putting to many, I found myself enjoying it despite my usual hatred for writing styles similar to the one in this book.

Without being too spoilery, let me just say that I adored the ending. My tear glands had just about dried up upon completing the book, Maybe it was just my thick-headedness, but I never saw that one coming.

This is the first E. Lockhart book I’ve ever read, and I must say she made quite an impression on me. I’ll definitely look out for her future releases. To those who are contemplating upon whether or not to read the book or not, I’d say just give it a try. It’s a short read, and even if you end up hating it (which, hopefully, you won’t), you won’t regret having wasted too much time on a book.

Chapter One

Excerpt #3:

The incident happened the early part of the summer before senior year. By the time the school year started, my doctors felt my face had healed enough that I could go back and not miss out on my last year in high school. I was nervous to say the least, but everyone knew what had happened to me and I had gone to school with these people for years. So once I got over the initial jitters, I figured things would go back to normal. I lasted one week before begging my parents to either home school me or let me earn my GED.

The stares were relentless. They weren’t the good kind either, like when a boy saw a hot girl. Some people looked at me as if they had encountered the elusive Sasquatch. Their face went slack, their eyes grew wide, and their mouths dropped open. I became somewhat immune to being Sasquatched. Usually, once I turned and looked directly at the person, he would quickly dart his gaze away and go about his day. Then there were others who I could tell by the look in their squinted eyes that the word ew was playing on a loop in their heads. They held their ground and let me know in no uncertain terms that I didn’t belong. I was shocked and hurt that these people, who just a few months ago I considered to be friends, were acting like I had the plague. I thought the staring would be the worst of it. That it would fade away after the newness of the freak show wore off. So I went back. The stares continued and were amped up by classroom snickers and hallway snide remarks.

Then there were the rumors. One claimed the doctors had gotten the skin for my graft from my behind, which garnered me the nickname, ass-face. There was also meat grinder, splotchy, and the timeless freak. I wore long sleeves to hide the scarring on my arms. Mentally, the long sleeves made me feel more secure and comfortable. Living in the south, though, where it was warm most of the year, short sleeves were the norm. Because of my fashion choice, the rumor started that I was a cutter. Maggie tried to set the record straight, but it was useless. I didn’t understand what everyone’s problem was with me. I didn’t do anything to warrant their cruel attention. I just wanted my life back. Once the name calling came into play, it didn’t take much convincing to get my parents on board with the home schooling idea.

For the rest of the year, I kept myself fairly isolated. I’d go out with my mom or Maggie shopping, to a movie, or to grab a bite to eat. Maggie came over almost every day or we’d talk on the phone. She was my link to the young adult world. I lived through her, going to all the football games, school dances, and senior prom. I had become quite talented at using my imagination to live a life until a few months ago.

Maggie and I were hanging out in my room. She was telling me about the college campus visit she had made over the weekend. Maggie had already applied and been accepted to a local university, so why she kept visiting out of town campuses was beyond me.

Leaning against the headboard of my bed, with my legs stretched out in front of me, I said, “I don’t get why you keep going to these different campuses. You know you’re going to Southern U.”

Maggie was lying on her stomach across my bed, flipping through the latest issue of Vogue. “I like to keep my options open.”

“You like to go boy scouting and have college recruiters kiss your ass.”

“That too.”

Maggie ran track and was damn good at it, winning all the local and state championships. She had her pick of any college in the country. They all wanted her to come save their women’s track and field programs. But she liked Southern University and didn’t want to leave her family just yet.

“SU not only has a great track team, but the Greek parties are legendary. The boys are super-hot. I’m sure my husband is among them. And the connections I’ll have after graduation are endless.”

I suddenly felt jealous of my friend. She wasn’t just making plans for her next date, track meet, or party. She was making plans for her future. My mind raced ahead to what my future looked like. I had applied and got accepted to Chambers toward the end of my junior year. Then the incident happened and with the bullying at school, I figured I’d stay home and take online classes. Better to be safe than sorry. But after taking all the classes, then what? I couldn’t see a future beyond the walls of my house. All I wanted was to live the life I had planned on before my world was turned upside down. I made up my mind that day it was time to start living again.

Prologue – Hers

When my husband works overnights at the fire station, I sleep on his side of the bed. Max doesn’t know that. Even though he spends more nights in our bed than out of it, I miss him enough to burrow in the sheets that emanate the remnants of his aftershave. I feel cocooned in his arms even when he’s not around. Sleep comes easier over here.

That’s where I am, tucked underneath the down cover, safe in a dreamless slumber, when a pounding rouses me. My heart leaps in surprise and I launch into a seated position, hand hovering over my chest. With a blind hand, I feel along the bedside table to find my glasses and jam them onto my nose. Knuckle pounding against wood doesn’t cease when I capture the time.

Nothing good can come of someone knocking on your door at one in the morning.

I scoot off the bed and shrug into the lightweight robe that lies on my husband’s suit valet.

He hates it when I leave my things there, I think numbly. Somehow, my body’s moving forward, even though every nerve ending screams for me to crawl back into bed and pretend this is a dream. It’s almost as if I know the Grim Reaper lurks on the other side of that door. I imagine a black hooded robe and bony skeletal fingers clutching a scythe waiting for me.

If there were enough time, I’d bargain with him. Beg to replace my life for his. Give up everything I have on God’s green earth for the man who gave me the gift of a full, flourishing life.

A knock on the door means it’s too late for brokering. If a ringing phone yanked me from sleep, it wouldn’t be this daunting. The fear wouldn’t be overpowering all of my other senses.

With a quivering hand, I flip on a light switch and unlatch the lock on our front door.

Their faces are grim, solemn. Hot tears blur my vision before I can identify who has come to deliver the news. Even before they speak, a strangled cry rips from my throat and my knees buckle. Like a puppet cut from its strings, I collapse to the floor. Strong arms catch me, encircling my waist, squeezing me tight.

The pressure of this man’s arms around me is the only thing reminding me that I’m still alive and not thrust into the depths of hell.

“Don’t say it,” I shriek. A feral cat stole my voice box, the howls ripping from my body completely unlike any other sound I’ve ever made.

“Violet.” This time the stern voice fights through the tornado of emotion and I blink hazily upward.

“Felix,” I whisper through a dry, cracked throat. Soot and ash still mar his cheeks, hair disheveled in every which way. Weariness seeps off him—from the slump in his shoulders to the exhaustion in his eyes.

“We lost him. I’m so sorry. We lost him.”

I don’t remember much of anything after that.
